I have seen monkeys since being here but as of today they
have officially desecrated our campus. Even with my prior experience of being
bit by one in Africa, it is hard to remember that they can be really ornery
animals and shouldn't be played with. They are so cute in such an ugly way, and
just human enough that they fascinate me. This one started the day sitting on
the roof of the Young’s house (the Green house)-which is just behind the
Elephant house were myself and the other volunteers live. I heard about him
from Rebecca (Mommy Young) at breakfast but it wasn’t until the afternoon that
he ventured over to us. When I came back from grabbing my camera, someone had
given him a banana. I would of stopped it if I knew it was happening because I
don’t want them getting into the habit of coming to us for food, but what was
done was done and it happened to set up nicely for picture taking. Even though
the shots don’t all look like it, I promise I stayed a healthy distance away.
Oh and the Young’s named him George because he kind of looks
like George Bush. No offense Georgie. He also looks like one of our drivers
named Williams. There was a lot of laughter in the office when Williams held a
picture of the monkey’s face next to his face. And I apologize for the soft
monkey porn.
On our way into Chennai for church last Sunday, we had to
stop at the toll booth—which normally has monkeys too. A lot of time they will
sit in the rafters of the toll booth roof. Well as we were waiting for our turn
to pay, I looked to my left and saw one sliding down a hanging cable/rope—all
mission impossible/GI Joe like. Then a few more started and it was perfect! They
were even perfectly staggered! It was such a simple thing but it was so funny
to me. It honestly looked like they had been given a mission and were landing
behind enemy lines. I love those rabies infested human like animals so much!
